Danish Design – Contemporary Furniture

Danish Design Series 7 Chair

Danish Design

Denmark is a small country that has always punched above its weight, quite literally during the Viking era! This ability by Danes to take the world by storm is most evident in the success of Danish designers. From the late 1940s Danish furniture designers, architects and artists began to make their mark internationally. The most famous is Arne Jacobsen, who was both an architect and furniture designer, who designed and furnished the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1960 (it’s now known as the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel). Other notable Danish furniture designers include Poul Kjaerholm and Verner Panton.

A hallmark of Danish design is a down-to-earth aesthetic that blended style with function, and simplicity with sophistication and a certain sense of cool. Another hallmark of Danish designers, like their Nordic counterparts, is that they reflected their native country’s social awareness and democracy, crafting beautiful items that improved life and were affordable to more than just a wealthy elite.

Nowhere is this sense of cool more evident than in the famous 1963 Morely photo of a naked Christine Keeler sitting in an Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chair. Our replica Jacobsen Series 7 dining chair is made from a single piece of pressure moulded plywood sitting on four chrome polished legs. A great space saving feature of the Series 7 chair is that they can be stacked. At only £69 each, in a wide range of colours, with free UK mainland postage, our reproduction Jacobsen chair fits well the Nordic ideal of beautiful but affordable furniture.

Another equally iconic chair, Verner Panton’s S-shaped plastic chair, was like wise photographed for Vogue magazine supporting a naked Kate Moss in January 1995. Verner Panton (1926-1998) produced some of Denmark’s most innovative and funky furniture. His 1967 Panton Chair was the first single unit chair made from moulded plastic. Our replica is available in a range of vibrant colours including red, white, Emerald green, black, and many more. At only £149, with free UK mainland delivery, this icon of contemporary furniture is very affordable.

The PK31 armchair by Poul Klaerholm is another excellent example of the simplicity and functionality of 1950s Danish furniture design. Luxurious and comfortable, our replica PK31 armchair is made of the finest Italian leather and comes in black, white and dark or tan brown. At £499, with free UK mainland delivery, this is an affordable piece of contemporary designer furniture.

We mustn’t forget one of the most iconic Danish Chairs of all time, Jacobsen’s masterpiece the Egg Chair, with matching ottoman and available from Pash as a Chair & Ottoman set. Upholstered in your choice of cashmere, wool and leather. The chair was designed for the lobby of the SAS Royal Hotel, the cocoon shape purposely designed to provide privacy in open spaces. The design has transcended from the hotel lobby to homes all around the world.

Danish design is marked by the desire to be democratic and to reach everyone. Beautiful but affordable, the Pash Classics replicas bring that ideal within reach to us all.
